Think going to and from Carmel every single day for school, and worse sports in the summer.īack then there were probably 25 actual legit local surfers (including south coast) if I had to guess, meaning Big Sur residents. Having lived there I can confirm that the slow traffic going up and down the coast road causes major inconvenience to locals, and that was in the 90’s. Big Sur guys are welcome too and hopefully can bring some aloha home with them. Hopefully we can at least share a smile and some good vibes. Likely if you're a Monterey local we'll probably cross paths at some point as I've surfed the whole greater Bay Area for years and will continue to do so. Some of the reefs of Big Sur can be surfed up to 20 feet +. I paddled out in DOH OBSF today and it was quite uncrowded despite about 5 cams pointing directly at the surf. Learning to surf large waves will massively reduce crowding issues. Not to mention when it gets large, which it does in central and northern CA more than a few times a year, the crowds will thin out anyway no matter how much exposure a spot gets. Moreover, many of the spots were hardly what I'd call crowded (or hell even that good) as access was hard and in many cases very dangerous. I can easily say that the Big Sur guys were the least friendly people I've ever had the displeasure of surfing with anywhere on the planet. I understand congestion can be annoying but what nice part of California doesn't have traffic? The mindless NIMBYism in this state from many of the privelidged residents is sickening and Big Sur is about as bad as it gets (Jack Keroauc would vomit in his grave if he knew what was going on). While Fullers specifically is a bit of an anomaly here as the easier access points are private, I'm talking about the general attitude of the area. I can't threaten people at my local(ish) spots and then fly to Puerto Rico and surf and expect the welcome mat thrown out for me. For me to harass outsiders would be massively hypocritical as I frequent other spots in a variety of places within the state, and also in different countries. In fact, a large minority of people surfing around here seem to be from SoCal trying to find real winter juice in my area. I get "inconvenienced" at my "local" breaks by outsiders all the time some of which are fairly off the beaten path and have no reports or cams or anything.
